Obesity in Pets: Causes, Risks, and How to Help Your Pet Lose Weight

Obesity is one of the most common and preventable health issues seen in pets today. As veterinary professionals, we know that carrying excess weight can significantly impact your pet’s quality of life, leading to serious health problems and a shorter lifespan. Understanding the causes, risks, and ways to manage obesity can help you keep your furry friend healthy and happy.

           Causes of Obesity in Pets

            Overfeeding

Feeding pets more calories than they need is one of the primary causes of obesity. Treats, table scraps, and free-feeding throughout the day can quickly add up.

            Lack of Exercise

Pets that do not get regular physical activity are at higher risk of gaining weight. Indoor cats and dogs with sedentary lifestyles are particularly vulnerable.

            Breed and Genetics

Certain breeds are more predisposed to obesity. Labrador Retrievers, Beagles, Dachshunds, and some domestic cat breeds often have a genetic tendency to gain weight.

            Age

As pets age, their metabolism slows down, and they may become less active, making weight gain more likely.

            Underlying Medical Conditions

Health issues like hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease, and some medications can contribute to weight gain in pets.

Before starting a weight loss program, consult with us. We can rule out underlying health problems and help you set a safe and realistic weight loss plan tailored specifically to your pet’s needs.

            Measure Food Portions

We recommend using a measuring cup to ensure you're feeding the correct amount based on your pet’s ideal weight, not their current weight. Avoid "eyeballing" portions, as this can easily lead to overfeeding. Feed according to the guidelines on the back of the dog food bag! Every diet has different calories per cup, so it is best to follow the recommended amount based on your pet's ideal weight.

            Choose a Balanced Diet

Specialized weight management diets are available that are lower in calories while still providing complete nutrition. We can help recommend the best diet for your pet. At Clover Vet, we recommend Purina, Hills Science Diet, and Royal Canin! Majority of the staff feed Purina to their pets! These diets are balanced and meet AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officals) standards.

            Limit Treats

Treats should make up no more than 10% of your pet’s daily calorie intake. We can suggest healthier treat alternatives that your pet will love without contributing to weight gain.

            Increase Exercise

Daily walks, playtime, interactive toys, and other activities suited to your pet's age and fitness level can help burn calories and keep your pet mentally stimulated.

            Monitor Progress

Regular weigh-ins at home or during veterinary visits can help track your pet’s progress. We are here to guide and adjust the plan as needed to ensure steady and healthy weight loss.

Raw vs. Kibble: What’s Best to Feed My Pet?

As pet parents, we all want what’s best for our furry family members—especially when it comes to nutrition. One of the most common questions we hear at our veterinary clinic is: “Should I feed my pet raw food or kibble?” With so many conflicting opinions online, it can be hard to separate fact from fiction. As veterinary professionals, we’re here to help you make an informed, science-backed decision about your pet’s diet.

The Rise of Raw Feeding: What Is It?

Raw feeding, also known as the BARF diet (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones and Raw Food) typically includes raw meat, bones, fruits, vegetables, and sometimes dairy or eggs. Advocates of raw diets often claim benefits such as shinier coats, healthier teeth, and better digestion. However, it’s important to note that much of this evidence is anecdotal and not supported by robust scientific research.

While the idea of a “natural” diet sounds appealing, raw feeding carries significant risks:

The Case for Kibble: Safe, Balanced, and Backed by Science

Kibble, or dry food, is designed to provide a complete and balanced diet that meets your pet’s nutritional needs at every life stage. It is formulated by veterinary nutritionists and rigorously tested for safety and efficacy.

Understanding Grief and Learning How to Cope

Losing a beloved pet is one of the most heart-wrenching experiences a person can go through. Our pets are more than just animals; they are loyal companions, sources of unconditional love, and integral parts of our families. When they pass away, it can leave a profound emptiness that is difficult to navigate. If you are mourning the loss of a pet, know that your grief is valid, and you are not alone.

           Understanding Pet Loss Grief

Grieving the loss of a pet is a unique experience. Some people may feel intense sadness, while others may experience anger, guilt, or even numbness. All of these emotions are normal responses to loss. Pets play major roles in our daily lives, offering routine, affection, and companionship, so their absence can be deeply destabilizing.

It’s important to give yourself permission to grieve without judgment. Everyone's journey through loss looks different, and there is no "right" timeline for healing.

           The Stages of Grief

Many people experience grief in stages, although not everyone moves through them in a linear order. The commonly recognized stages of grief include:

            Denial

: Struggling to accept the reality of the loss.

            Anger

: Feeling frustration or resentment about the loss.

            Bargaining

: Wishing you could have done something differently.

            Depression

: Deep sadness and emotional pain.

            Acceptance

: Coming to terms with the loss and beginning to heal.

Understanding these stages can help you recognize your emotions and reassure you that what you are feeling is a natural part of the grieving process.

Ways to Cope with the Loss of a Pet

            Allow Yourself to Grieve

Take the time you need to mourn your pet. Cry if you need to, talk about your pet with friends or family, and honor the deep bond you shared.

            Create a Memorial

Some find comfort in creating a memorial for their pet. This could be as simple as framing a favorite photo, planting a tree, or creating a scrapbook of cherished memories.

            Seek Support

Talking to others who understand the loss of a pet can be incredibly healing. Pet loss support groups, online forums, and professional counselors who specialize in grief can provide compassionate spaces to share and heal.

            Take Care of Yourself

Grief can take a physical and emotional toll. Try to get enough rest, eat nourishing foods, and engage in gentle activities that bring you comfort.

            Honor Their Memory

Consider making a donation in your pet’s name to an animal charity, volunteering at a local shelter, or writing a letter to your pet expressing your love and gratitude.

How to Choose the Right Animal Hospital for Your Pet

How do I Select the Right Animal Hospital?

You’ve just gotten a new dog or cat. Or perhaps you’ve moved to a new town. Both of these are reasons to find an animal hospital for your pet. But with so many options, how do you know which one is best? Follow these tips for selecting the right animal hospital for your pet.

First, think about the variety and quality of the services offered. Animal hospitals provide services that go above and beyond those of a traditional veterinary clinic. There’s no doubt you’ll want the very best for your furry friends. Stop by the animal hospital for a visit or a tour, read reviews from clients, and ask people you know for recommendations.

Next, consider whether your pet will need any specialized care. Many pets have a chronic condition like diabetes or arthritis. For common diseases or illnesses like this, just about any veterinarian can provide the standard course of treatment. However, some dogs or cats have more advanced medical conditions. You may need an animal hospital that offers cardiology or orthopedic services, for example. If you’re currently working with a veterinarian in another city or who can’t provide the level of specialized care you need, ask them for a referral. They should be more than happy to make sure your pet gets the care he or she needs.

Finally, consider the location of your animal hospital. Choosing a veterinarian on the other side of town from your home or office may not be the best choice when your pet needs care for a sudden illness or injury. Selecting an animal hospital that’s convenient may also make you more likely to take your pet in for routine well visits and vaccinations, both of which are important for their overall health and welfare.

If you’re looking for an animal hospital in the York, Lake Wylie, Rock Hill, or Fort Mill, SC areas, consider Clover Vet.
What is an Animal Hospital?

Explore comprehensive pet care at Clover Vet’s animal hospital. From routine checkups to surgeries, we’ve got all your pet’s needs covered.

What Services are Offered at an Animal Hospital?

You love your pet. No matter what type of animals you have, they’re like members of your family. And just like the humans that live in your home, you want to make sure they have the best possible medical care. Considering all of this, you may wonder what type of pet medicine provider you should choose. It all depends on the type of care your pet needs. At Clover Vet, we operate a full service animal hospital. Here’s a little more about the types of services you can expect to find at an animal hospital.

Simply put, an animal hospital provides complete care for pets. Our veterinarians provide the same services you can get at a veterinary clinic. That means they’ll see your pet for a routine checkup, annual vaccinations, and testing. However, an animal hospital can do even more without referring you to another facility.

For example, we have an in-house laboratory with CBC and chemistry machines. We get the results of these tests immediately, leading to faster, more accurate treatment for your pet. We can do other tests right here, too, like X-rays. If your pet needs general or basic orthopedic surgery, we’ll handle that, too. Your pet will be treated by the same veterinarians that examine them on their well visits.

Plus, we have a full-service pet pharmacy. We’ll get you the medications your pet needs while you’re here. If you need a refill, simply use our online pet pharmacy and have it delivered right to your door.

Is There First Aid for Pets?

Be prepared for pet emergencies with Clover Vet’s first aid tips. Master CPR, choking relief, and bleeding care to protect your furry friend.

What Are Some First Aid Tips for Pets?

When your dog or cat is injured or in danger, it can be terrifying – for both you and your pet! Just like when a person gets hurt, the first thing you need to remember is to stay calm, then grab your pet’s first aid kit. Before you pick up the phone to call a York veterinarian in Fort Mill, Lake Wylie, or Rock Hill, SC, you should assess the injury and take action. Here are some first aid tips from the staff at Clover Vet that could help save your pet’s life:

            CPR

             – If your pet isn’t breathing, you can perform CPR. After turning your pet on his or her side, turn the head up, hold the jaws shut, and blow a puff of air into the nose every three seconds. You can also perform chest compressions if your pet’s heart isn’t beating. You should do three compressions for every breath you administer. Then call a York veterinarian immediately for assistance.

            Choking

             – Dogs and cats can choke on food or on other objects. If you see your pet choking, don’t panic! Take a deep breath, then place your fingers in your pet’s mouth to see if you can remove the object. If that doesn’t work, try the Heimlich maneuver. Give a sharp thrust on the chest of your animal. This should free up the object or food particle that was blocking the airway.

            Bleeding

             – Minor cuts just need to be kept clean and bandaged, but profuse bleeding can put your pet’s life in danger. Grab your emergency kit and pull out the bandages and gauze. Elevate the area that’s injured and apply pressure to the wound. Then apply the bandages and wrap the wound in gauze.

If your pet’s suffered any type of trauma

           call Clover Vet immediately

? This observance started in 2007 as a way to raise awareness of this disease. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) are one of the main groups fighting rabies in the United States. While you may think of the CDC as a group that focuses on diseases affecting humans, they work to eliminate rabies because it is transmitted to humans by animals.

Sometimes pet owners discount the danger of rabies. You may think that it doesn’t occur very often, or at least not in America. But according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, almost

6000 cases of rabies were reported

The reason we tend to think we don’t have to worry about this disease is because many of these cases are discovered in wild animals. Foxes, raccoons, skunks, and bats are the most common carriers. However, it only takes one encounter with a rabid animal to put you or your pet in danger.

The good news is that this disease is 100 percent preventable. Rabies vaccinations are the single most effective way to protect your pets. They also keep the disease from spreading to other animals or people. The shots are very affordable. Some veterinarians even offer discounted vaccines during promotional periods or certain months of the year.

Pets in South Carolina are required to have an up-to-date rabies shot. To learn more about this and other pet vaccinations, talk with your veterinarian. He or she can let you know about all the vaccines your pet needs to stay healthy.

You should always be cautious when you’re shopping online. This is especially true if you’re shopping for pet medications. Although many websites promise low prices and fast delivery, the quality and safety of the medicines you order must always be your top priority. In fact, you could be putting your pet’s health at risk by trusting an unknown online vet pharmacy. As a partner with

, Clover Vet wants you to be aware of the following things before making any purchases from a vet pharmacy online:

            Check for credentials –

First and foremost, look for a online vet pharmacy’s credentials. Are they accredited by Vet-VIPPS? Do they have positive reviews? Is contact information listed? All of these are signs that a pharmacy is reputable. However, you should still ask your veterinarian for a recommendation.

Don’t buy alternative drugs for serious health issues –

Even though a drug says it will treat the same symptoms, it’s not necessarily the same. Stick with what your vet has prescribed, even if the online pharmacy recommends otherwise.

Talk to a real person –

Call the online vet pharmacy and ask them questions about their experience and the medications your pet needs. Note how they communicate with you. Does the representative seem unsure about their own products? If the answer is

            Call your veterinarian –

Always ask your vet about any online pharmacy before making a purchase. We care about the well-being of your pet and want to do what’s in its best interests.

           Preparing Your Pet for Disasters

Just as you want your family to be ready in the event of a disaster, you need to make sure your pets are included in your emergency plans. But being prepared goes beyond just having the emergency contact information of a veterinarian near you. Since September is National Disaster Awareness Month, the staff at Clover Vet wants to share these tips on how to best prepare your pet for a disaster:

Never leave your pets behind or alone –

Never leave your pet behind in an emergency evacuation. Should you not be able to take your pet with you if evacuation orders are given, make sure you leave them with a trusted friend or family member or find an organization that’s offering shelter to pets. If you aren’t safe where you are, neither is your pet. Get them a safe place to stay, too.

            Get rescue stickers –

Sometimes a disaster strikes quickly without giving you much time to prepare. In some cases, your pet may be scared and run off or you may not have time to grab your pet before you have to flee, such as with a tornado or a fire. Here’s where rescue stickers come in handy. After the danger subsides, people will be on the lookout for stranded pets. These stickers will alert them to search the area and find your pet.

            Have an emergency kit –

Should your pet get injured in a disaster, you might need to use a first aid kit immediately since the injuries could be a matter of life and death. Make sure you have a kit ready to go and have a veterinarian near you as an emergency contact on your phone.

            Practice, practice, practice! –

Formulate a exit or shelter-seeking plan and practice it with your entire family, including your pet. Pets can tell when you’re nervous or scared and they become stressed as a reaction. If you practice an emergency plan with them, they’ll be more calm in the event of serious emergency.

As we’ve seen with this month’s hurricanes, natural disasters can happen anywhere. In addition to providing York veterinary services, we also want to make sure you’re ready for anything. And in the future, if your pet is injured in a weather event, fire, or other emergency situation,

, it s estimated that 59% of cats and 54% of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese. Just like in humans, obesity can lead to the onset of diseases like type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, kidney disease, heart disease, and respiratory diseases. Obesity also increases the likelihood that your pet’s life expectancy will be shortened. Our veterinary clinic recognizes that these statistics are high and we want to help your pet maintain an ideal weight.

Your pet is normally considered obese at the 20% mark above the ideal weight of your pet’s breed, age, and body type. Lack of exercise, large food portions, and the metabolism slow down that happens after spaying or neutering all contribute to weight gain in cats and dogs. Let’s take a look at some of the common indicators that your pet may be overweight.

How to Prepare for a Veterinary Emergency

Your pet is like another member of your family. And just like the people in your family, you want to be ready to help them in the event of an emergency. Your pet’s life is valuable to you and to the team at Clover Vet. As a full-service animal hospital, we’d like to share a few helpful tips on how you and your family can prepare for a visit with an emergency vet near you:

            Diagnosing an emergency –

For starters, if you ever have a concern about your pet, it’s never a bad idea to give a call to an animal hospital near you. At Clover Vet, we have trained staff that can help you identify the signs of a veterinary emergency. Using the information you give us, we can determine whether your pet is in any immediate danger.

Finding the right level of care –

Here at Clover Vet, we offer a variety of services that can help your pet in the event of an emergency. Our animal hospital conducts surgeries and offers overnight care for pets who need monitoring. For 24 hour emergency veterinary services, we have contacts nearby that can help you any time of the day or night. We understand that critical health needs can arise at any time. That’s why we want to help you in any way we can.

Making a plan of action –

Program the number of your veterinarian office into your phone. Make an action plan on how to get to their office quickly and safely in the event of an emergency. Know your veterinarian’s and and assistants’ names and try to schedule regular checkups to prevent future emergency visits

How to Find the Right Veterinarian for Your Pet

Pets are part of your family. When it comes to their care, you want to find a veterinarian who will give them the best care possible. But with so many vet clinics near you, how do you find the right professional? Clover Vet is here to help you. Here are some tips on how to choose the right veterinarian for your pet.

           Look for proper credentials

For starters, check to see if the veterinary clinic has AAHA accreditation. This shows that a veterinarian is qualified to provide animal medical services. Don’t trust a clinic that lacks proper credentials and experience. Forgetting to check this important fact could put your pet at risk due to poor quality – and even dangerous – medical care.

           Schedule a meet and greet

Contact a vet clinic and arrange a day where you can tour the facility and meet the staff. Meeting the team that will attend to your pet’s health and well-being will put you at ease. During this tour, take note of the facility’s cleanliness, the mood of the animals, the way employees conduct themselves, and the quality of the equipment. Find out the conditions of the specific areas where your pet will be housed while it’s at the vet’s office.

           Ask questions

As you meet with the clinic’s staff, don’t be hesitant to ask questions and share your concerns. Pay attention to how the vet communicates with you and how they listen to what you’re saying about your pet. If you feel uncomfortable at any time, trust your instincts and find another place to care for your pet.

           Read reviews

Read about others’ experiences with any veterinarian you’re considering. This will give you a better perspective on their values and the way they treat their patients.

Clover Vet is a top vet clinic in our community. Trust us to take care of you and your pets for life!

How to Find the Best Dog Boarding

Dogs are loyal, kind, and loving – even silly at times! They’re more than man’s best friend. They’re family. And just like for any member of your family, you want to make sure that your dog is taken care of when you are away. That’s where dog boarding in Clover and Lake Wylie is so helpful. But how do you find the best caretakers for your best friend? At Clover Vet, we value your pet’s safety and care, regardless of where they are. To help you, we’ve created a guide on how to find the best dog boarding facility:

            Research –

Research is key when it comes to finding the best kennel for your dog. Do some online research and read online reviews. Also talk to locals about their experience working with any facility you’re considering. Narrow your options down to two or three businesses and contact each one.

            Supervision and activeness –

Call or meet in-person with the staff. Have a list of questions ready for them. Be sure to ask about their supervision policies and how active they are with their canine guests. You want a team of caring people who want to make your dog’s stay fun and stress-free while getting the attention they need.

            Medical care –

Also ask any kennel about their medical care. If something happens to your dog while they’re staying at the facility, what will they do? Do they have on-site care? Or do they partner with medical staff for treatment? Try to find a place that in some way provides medical services for your pet should they require care.

Although we don’t offer dog boarding at our animal hospital, the staff at Clover Vet is happy to give recommendations. Our kind-hearted staff truly cares about the well-being of pets in Fort Mill, Lake Wylie, York, and Rock Hill, SC. Let us take care of your favorite buddy today!

Does Your Pet Need Health Insurance?

Considering pet insurance? Clover Vet explains how it reduces costs and helps you pick the right policy for your pet’s care.

Does Your Pet Need Health Insurance?

You know that health insurance is a must-have for the people in your family. But what about your pets? Is this something you need to add to your pet care routine? Clover Vet wants to help you make the best decisions for your dogs and cats. And, we want to help you make the best decisions regarding your pet care finances. Here are a few things to consider if you’re thinking of getting pet insurance.

Pet health insurance can reduce financial worries –

Caring for pets can be expensive, especially when it comes to their healthcare needs. Veterinarians have made many advances in the way care is provided. Technology is now used for many types of treatments and diagnostic tests. However, this type of modern pet care comes at a cost. Many pet owners are shocked to find out how much certain procedures cost. If you’re concerned about pet care costs, especially for serious illnesses or chronic conditions, pet insurance may be a good choice. Depending on your policy, you may pay less out of your pocket if your dog or cat gets sick.

Pet health insurance policies may vary –

If you’re considering pet insurance, it’s in your best interest to thoroughly review any policy before you sign up. There may be varying levels of coverage, optional add-ons, and differences regarding the coverage of pre-existing conditions and prescriptions. As you’re shopping for a policy, treat it as if you were purchasing a policy for yourself or someone in your family. You want to get a policy that will be helpful if you encounter a health concern with your pet.

Can Your Dog or Cat Get the Flu?

Pets can catch the flu too! Clover Vet shares symptoms and vaccine options to keep your dog or cat healthy during flu season.

Can Your Dog or Cat Get the Flu?

This year’s flu season was one of the worst in recent memory. You know that the flu is potentially very dangerous for humans and that you should get the flu vaccine in order to protect yourself and others. But did you know that your pets can catch the flu, too? Today, Clover Vet would like to discuss the flu situation with you. Here how the flu can affect York County pets and why cat and dog vaccines for the flu are so important:

How do pets catch the influenza virus?

Studies have shown that pets can catch the flu, as well as other viruses, from humans. While not common, it is possible and is another reason to be alert during flu season. To help prevent your pet from catching the flu, try to keep your dog or cat away from anyone who is sick.

What are the signs of the flu in pets?

Recognizing flu symptoms in your pets can save them from harm. If your pet displays any of these signs, call our veterinarian in York County immediately:

Discharge from the nose or eyes (whether it’s clear, contains mucus, or is bloody)

            Coughing, wheezing, or hacking

Difficulty breathing or abnormal breath patterns

            Unusual drowsiness

Vomiting, diarrhea, or other digestive problems

            Vaccines help prevent the flu.

Vaccines are available for Canine Parainfluenza Virus (CPV) and Canine Influenza Virus (CIV). (There is no specific flu virus or flu vaccination for cats, but they can carry strains of the illness and exhibit symptoms.) Ask a York County veterinarian about these and other dog vaccines, especially before flu season begins. Our vets understand your concern for your pets and you can rely on us to give you accurate information on what’s best for your pet.

If your pet is feeling a little under the weather, call Clover Vet. We’re here to help your pet stay happy and healthy during flu season and all year long.

Apart from these warning signs, there are other situations that should cause you to keep a close eye on your pet’s behavior and vital signs. These include insect bites or stings, choking, an accident, a fall, potential poisoning, or choking.

So what should you do if your pet has these symptoms? Think of how you’d react if your spouse, child, parent, or friend suffered from one of these conditions. You’d monitor them and seek immediate medical attention if their symptoms became severe. The same applies for your dog or cat. Your first step should be to call your veterinarian. Your vet and their team knows your pet already. They’ll be familiar with any chronic conditions or underlying health issues that would influence care. If your veterinarian recommends it, or if you feel that your pet’s condition is critical, you should seek urgent vet care near you.

Tips for traveling with pets by plane

            Visit the vet

             – Before you head out, schedule an appointment at your local animal hospital. Get a checkup for your pet and make sure they’re up-to-date on all their vaccinations.

Try to book a direct flight

             – Direct flights limit the chances of your being separated from your pet. Severe weather or baggage mishandling can cause you to wind up on a different flight from your pet.

Get the right crate or carrier

            – Make sure to purchase a USDA-approved crate or carrier. You should display proper identification and make sure it’s well-ventilated.

Inform all that you’re traveling with a pet

            – Tell all airline employees, both on the ground and in the air, that you’re traveling with a pet. This way, they’ll be ready to take action should there be a delay.

            See the vet

             – Just like we mentioned above, always visit a vet in York, SC before traveling with your pet.

            Start by prepping

             – Prepare for the trip by helping your pet get adjusted to riding in the car. Take them on short trips, gradually making them longer. Pack a pet travel kit that includes a bowl, leash, plastic bags, medication, first aid, toys, treats, and other supplies.

Purchase the right crate or carrier

             – Get a crate or carrier that allows your pet to easily stand, sit, and lie down. Make sure you properly secure the crate or carrier in your vehicle. If you choose not to crate your pet, keep them buckled up in the back seat.

Never leave them unattended in a vehicle

             – Never leave your pet alone in a car. Even with the windows down, you’re still placing your pet in danger of heat stroke.

6 Foods Your Dog Shouldn’t Eat

Here at Clover Vet, we know how much you love your dog. One of the veterinarian services we provide is advice for your dog’s overall health and well-being. That includes what they should and shouldn’t eat. In fact, one of the main causes of unexpected vet visits is the consumption of the wrong foods. Here are six foods that dogs shouldn’t eat:

            Alcohol

: Alcohol can be dangerous for your dog. However, it takes a much smaller amount to affect a dog than it does for humans. Dizziness, vomiting, and breathing issues are just a few of the problems that alcohol can cause for your dog. They can even fall into a coma or die due to alcohol consumption. Watch where you leave your alcoholic beverages inside and outside your home.

Coffee, tea, and other caffeinated products

: You should also be cautious of where you leave glasses or containers of coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate, and other foods and drinks that contain caffeine. Caffeine can be deadly to dogs. Keep anything that contains caffeine out of reach of your dog.

            Avocado

: Avocados are a healthy food for humans but not for canines. Don’t let your dogs eat avocados since they can cause indigestion and other digestive troubles, such as vomiting and diarrhea. This is because avocados contain persin, a chemical that is harmful to dogs.

            Grapes and raisins:

These fruits are beneficial to humans’ health – but it’s the exact opposite for dogs. Make sure grapes and raisins don’t stay on the floor. If your dog eats them, they can lead to kidney failure. Even in a small amount, these fruits can cause your dog to vomit, become depressed, or feel sluggish.

            Onions and garlic

: Onions and garlic add a delicious flavor to your food. But don’t let your dog eat garlic or onions in any form (raw, cooked, dehydrated, or powdered), as this can kill off a dog’s red blood cells and lead to anemia.

            Xylitol

: Xylitol is a sugar alcohol that’s commonly used as a sweetener. It can lead to low blood sugar or liver failure in dogs. It can even cause your dog to experience seizures. Don’t let your dog eat any products that contain xylitol, such as toothpaste and candy.

If you’re afraid your dog has eaten something that may be unhealthy, don’t wait to go to an animal clinic for veterinarian services. Call Clover Vet to get the care your dog needs.

6 First Aid Supplies for Your Pet

Your pet is an important part of your family. So it only makes sense that you want to take care of them just as you would your children, spouse, or other members of your household. Just as you should have a first aid kit for the people you live with, you should also have one that’s strictly for your pets. The York veterinarians at Clover Vet have put together a list of the things you should have on hand in case your furry pals need emergency medical care:

            Veterinary services contact list

             – Keep the contact information of your veterinarian as well as a 24/7 emergency animal hospital. If it’s a true veterinary emergency, these are the first people you need to talk to.

            Blanket

             – Keep a clean blanket for your pet in case that you have to pick up and carry them or wrap them up. A blanket can also provide a sense of comfort for your canine or feline friend.

            Gauze

            pads

             – These will help stop the bleeding for external injuries like minor cuts and scrapes. However, if the injury is bleeding severely, you need to take your pet to a veterinarian right away.

            Antiseptic

            wipes

             – Just like for humans, antiseptic wipes are the best way to disinfect wounds.

            Blunt

            -

            ended

            scissors

             – These are needed to cut bandages after they’ve been wrapped around an injury. The blunt ends guarantee that they’re safe for your pet and other members of your household.

            Tweezers

             – Tweezers are often the best way to remove ticks and splinters.

5 Ways to Make Your Pet a Part of the Holidays

The holiday season isn’t just a special time for children. It can also be a memorable time for the entire family. This includes your pets. As veterinarians near you, the staff at Clover Vet wants you to enjoy this joyful season with your pet. Here are five ways you can make your pets a part of your holiday celebrations:

            Travel with them

            – Socialization is important to your pets’ health as it helps them build their own social skills. This includes spending time with other people or other animals. Nowadays, it’s easier than ever to travel with pets thanks to new types of accommodations, such as hotels, that are considered pet friendly. However, don’t force your pets to come with you if they aren’t comfortable on long road trips. And of course, consider your pet’s temperament before exposing them to unfamiliar places or people.

Take them to see the holiday lights

            – Take your pets on a drive or walk around with them as you and your family look at the beautiful lights. Dogs may like this activity more than cats.

            Give them pet-friendly treats

             – Your pets will most likely try to grab some of the food off of your table or from your guests this holiday season. Make them their own homemade treats so they can join in the fun and you won’t have to worry about them eating something unhealthy.

Include them in the family photo

             – Make your pets feel special and include them in the family photo. Our pets are family, too.

            Make them a stocking–

Make your pets their own stocking filled with treats and toys just for them so they can join in on the holiday excitement.

5 Tips to Help You Care for Your Older Cat

An older cat can bring so much joy to a family. But it’s important to know that, just like older dogs, senior cats require different things than younger cats. To help you care for your beloved older kitty, the local veterinarians near you at Clover Vet want to share some advice. Here are five important tips to help you care for older cats:

Schedule routine visits to the vet –

One of the best ways you can help your senior cat is by scheduling frequent visits with local veterinarians near you. A vet will help you keep an eye on your senior cat’s health.

Help them maintain a healthy diet –

Giving your cat healthy foods in appropriate portions is essential for continued good health. A bad diet can cause your cat to to have issues with weight and other problems. We’ll help you create the best diet plan for your older cat.

            Brush their teeth regularly –

As sometimes happens with older dogs, older cats can develop problems with their oral health. With this in mind, make sure you brush their teeth often. If you notice that your cat has issues with chewing, bring them in for a dental evaluation.

Provide special toys and accommodations –

Senior cats need special accommodations to be able to play and rest comfortably. Use low-sided litter boxes, soft bedding, and any other items that will help your cat move about more comfortably. Find toys that can help them play without requiring quick or sudden movements.

Help them stay active safely –

Exercise is very important for older cats. However, your cat might need additional help or supervision when they spend time outside. Our vets in York, SC can help you figure out the best ways to keep your cat both active and safe.

5 Foods to Keep Away From Your Cat

We all know that cats are curious. This leads them to try all sorts of things, including some foods that might not be so good for them. Like many household pets, cats have sensitive digestive systems. With this in mind, it’s important that you feed them the right foods and avoid ones that might cause them harm. As your local provider of veterinarian services, the Clover Vet team wants your feline to stay happy and healthy. Here’s a list of foods that you should not let your cat eat:

            Dairy

             – Contrary to popular belief, cats should never have dairy products. While they may enjoy milk or cream, cats tend to be lactose-intolerant and dairy can greatly upset their digestive systems. Stay away from these foods and your cat will have a happier tummy.

            Tuna

             – It’s fine to give tuna to your cat every now and again. However, tuna is not a standalone meal. Although it’s healthy for humans, it lacks the nutrients cats need to maintain good overall health. Giving your cat tuna regularly may even hurt them in the long run.

            Raw eggs, meat, and fish

            – Just like humans, cats can get very sick from salmonella and E. coli. Keep your cat away from raw eggs, meat, and fish to be safe.

            Certain fruits, vegetables, and herbs

             – Never give your cat grapes (or raisins) as this can cause their kidneys to fail. Also don’t let them eat onions, garlic, or chives. These foods can cause anemia and gastrointestinal upset for a cat.

            Other harmful substances

             – Don’t let your cat near any medicine, alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, fat trimmings, or bones. All of these substances can seriously harm your cat.

5 Benefits of Natural Pet Products

Your pet’s well-being is one of your top concerns. This includes their happiness as well as their health. As you talk with your veterinarian about the best ways to accomplish this, you may have questions about the value of natural pet foods and other products. Here at Clover Vet, we encourage all pet owners to look for better ways to care for their pets. Here are five benefits of natural pet products that you should consider before you make your next purchase.

They can improve your pet’s quality of life.

Do you want to make your pet’s quality of life better? If you do, you should definitely consider buying natural products. Natural pet food and care products can have big benefits for your pet’s health. Products that aren’t derived from natural sources can contain toxic chemicals that can cause your pet distress.

They could help your pet live longer.

Just like with humans, what we put into our pets’ bodies could increase or decrease their lifespans. Natural products could lengthen your pet’s life by improving their overall health.

Natural products can help with speedier healing.

Natural products can act as catalysts in a pet’s healing process since the ingredients are better absorbed into your pet’s skin.

You can improve your pet’s nutrition without the side effects.

Natural pet foods can provide better nutrition. In many cases, there no unpleasant side effects if your dog has sensitivities. However, you should always speak with a vet before changing your pet’s diet.

Natural products can help you, too.

Since natural products keep your pet safer, you’ll have less to worry about – and if they can help your pet avoid health problems, these items could actually save you money in the long run.

4 Ways to Start Your Pet’s New Year Off Right

The new year is fast approaching, which means its time to make those resolutions. But what about your pet? As a full-service animal hospital near you, Clover Vet wants to share these ideas that will help you start the new year off right with your pet:

            Use natural pet products –

Consider switching to only organic or natural pet products in the new year. There are many options for pet food, grooming products, toys and more. These types of products are designed to be safe and beneficial for pets, as well as for the environment. However, it’s best to consult with a veterinarian first before you completely switch to using all natural products.

            Try new pet services –

Try out a new service for your pet. This could be a dog training class, a self-serve dog wash, or even a pet yoga class. More types of pet services are popping up all over the place so use the new year to explore them all. Due to advances in medical technology, pet care has become more expensive than ever. Pet insurance can help cover these costs while also offering reassurance to pet owners. The number of pet owners investing in policies for their animals is increasing steadily. Next year, consider getting your pet his or her own insurance coverage.

Use natural pet products – Consider switching to only organic or natural pet products in the new year. There are many options for pet food, grooming products, toys and more. These types of products are designed to be safe and beneficial for pets, as well as for the environment. However, it’s best to consult with a veterinarian first before you completely switch to using all natural products.

Try new pet services – Try out a new service for your pet. This could be a dog training class, a self-serve dog wash, or even a pet yoga class. More types of pet services are popping up all over the place so use the new year to explore them all. Not only will these activities be fun for your pet, but they may make things more convenient for you, too.

4 Ways to Care for the Needs of Your Older Dog

As we get older, we know that our overall health changes. Activities that we could once do easily often become more difficult as we age. The same is true for our dogs. Clover Vet has some advice to help your loyal companion stay happy and healthy during their senior years. Check out these tips from a veterinarian near you:

Schedule regular visits with a veterinarian near you

            – Work with your vet to create a comprehensive health plan for your dog. Your dog needs yearly visits to the vet to make sure they’re in continued good health. A vet will answer all of your questions and address any medical concerns. Dogs can’t speak to us, making hard to tell when they need help. Regular visits to our Rock Hill, SC animal hospital will identify problems before they become major concerns.

            Don’t forget dental care

             – As your dog gets older, be sure to check and brush their teeth on a regular basis. Dental hygiene is very important for older dogs. If you suspect a more serious problem with your dog’s teeth, bring them in for a checkup.

            Create a healthy diet

             – Giving older dogs healthy food is critical for good health. A poor diet can lead to weight gain and other concerns. Try giving your dog food that contains these fatty acids like EPA and DHA.

Be cautious when it comes to exercise

             – Your dog may struggle with certain activities as they get older. Keep this in mind before you decide to take them on long walks or walk them up hills or stairs. However, this doesn’t mean your dog shouldn’t exercise at all. Your vet will help you create an appropriate exercise schedule to give your dog exactly what he or she needs.

If you’re looking for a veterinarian near you to help you give your older dog the best life possible, call Clover Vet. Our Rock Hill, SC animal hospital and vet pharmacy are always here for you and your pet.

4 Things to Consider Before Giving a Pet for Christmas

4 Things to Consider Before Giving a Pet for Christmas

Christmas is almost upon us and that means people are scrambling to find those last minute gifts. As you’re trying to pick just the right thing for someone you care about, the staff here at Clover Vet would like you to consider this: Although giving a pet as a present sounds like a great idea, it’s actually quite a commitment. As York County veterinarians who care about the animals we serve, we’d like you to think about the following things before you give a pet for Christmas.

            Consider the commitment.

The average lifespan of a dog is between 10 and 13 years. For cats, it’s between 12 and 18 years. That’s a long time to ask the recipient to commit to, especially if they aren’t expecting it.

            Consider the care.

Pets require time and attention from their owners. They need to be fed, exercised, bathed, and loved. Those responsibilities remain even if the pet’s owner is out of town. That means alternate care must be arranged.

Consider the cost. Pet food costs money.

So do toys, visits to the veterinarian, boarding, and grooming. Some estimates claim that owning a pet costs over $1000 in the first year alone.

            Consider the compatibility

. Not every breed of pet will be compatible with its owner’s lifestyle. A dog that needs lots of exercise and room to move, for example, might not be very happy in an apartment.

As you can see, there are many factors that must be considered before giving a pet as a gift. In fact, these are the same things anyone must consider before deciding to become a pet owner. The veterinarians at Clover Vet believe that pets enhance and bring much joy to life. At the same time, bringing a pet into your family isn’t something to take lightly. When you’ve done your homework and know you’re ready for the responsibility of a pet, we hope you’ll bring your dog or cat to our vet clinic. Our animal hospital is always ready to provide the best possible care to pets in Fort Mill, Lake Wylie, York, Rock Hill, and other areas of York County.

4 Signs Your Pet May Have Dental Problems

Here at Clover Vet, we’re more than just a York County veterinary hospital. While we offer traditional veterinary services and have a full-service animal hospital (complete with a surgical unit), we also offer the latest advances in pet health. This includes pet dentistry. You may not have known it, but February is National Pet Dental Health Month. We use this time to put a little extra emphasis on dental care for the pets we serve. As a pet dentist for both dogs and cats, we want you to play an active role in your pet’s health. Read on to learn about four common symptoms of dental problems in pets.

            Loose teeth or broken teeth

. Although age may play a factor in a pet’s tooth loss, it can also be a sign of oral disease. If you notice these signs, get your dog or cat to a pet dentist as soon as possible.

            Bleeding gums.

Just like in humans, bleeding gums can be a sign of periodontal disease.

            Excessive tartar.

Another telltale sign of dental disease is a buildup of tartar on the teeth. Frequent brushing can help prevent this and stimulate the gums so they’ll stay healthy.

            Problems with eating.

4 Reasons to Take Care of Your Pet’s Teeth

Just like the humans in your family, your pets need a healthy dental routine to keep their teeth in good condition. Why is pet dental care so important for your furry friends? Clover Vet wants you to know about four particularly important reasons to take care of your pet’s teeth.

Skipping dental care can lead to pain –

If you don’t take care of your teeth, chances are you’ll experience some pain in your teeth or gums. But when pets hurt, they can’t communicate what they’re feeling to their owners. Skipping regular dental treatments can cause your pet to be in pain or to even lose weight if it becomes too painful to eat. Avoid this issue by scheduling regular checkups so your dentist for dogs and cats can catch problems before they get too serious.

            Dental disease can develop –

Failing to care for your pet’s teeth can also lead to dental diseases. Research has shown that four out of five dogs ages three and older will develop some form of periodontal disease. Some of these issues can cause harm to other organs, such as the heart. Avoid this scary scenario by talking to your veterinarian about pet dental care on your next visit.

Pets aren’t easy on their teeth –

As all pet owners know, our companions like to chew on all sorts of things. As a result, pets will wear out their teeth faster than humans. Keep an eye on what your pet likes to chew on and invest in softer toys if necessary.

Dental problems lead to stinky breath –

Your pet’s breath doesn’t always smell like roses. This problem can get worse if tooth decay and gum disease are involved. Help your pet have better smelling breath through regular dental care.

3 Health Benefits of Owning a Pet

Pets are an important part of your family. You enjoy their companionship and they bring lots of joy to your life. But did you know that there are actually health benefits to owning a pet? Although our vet clinic cares for animals, not people, we can share research that medical doctors have conducted. Here are just a few of the health benefits that can come along with owning a pet.

            Pets lower anxiety

. Numerous studies have shown that interacting with a pet can increase the amount of positive chemicals in your brain, including dopamine and seratonin. These chemicals make you feel calmer. Some researchers have even found that having a pet can lead to lower blood pressure.

Pets are helpful with mental health issues

. A 2016 study conducted in the United Kingdom found that pets were a big part of the support system for individuals dealing with ongoing mental health conditions. The patients studied built strong relationships with their pets and could turn to them in times of crisis.

Pets can help people of all ages.

You already know that pets can help children develop social skills and learn responsibility. But they’re also good for older folks. They provide companionship and a reason for the elderly to get up and get moving (as they are able). Some studies have shown that they’re beneficial for Alzheimer’s patients as well.

           3 Benefits of Cat Furniture

Your indoor cat needs places to climb, scratch, and hunt in order to live a happy life. If you don’t provide a safe space for this behavior, you could wind up with damage to your couches, chairs, curtains, carpets, and other household items. For many, cat furniture is the solution for many of these problems. The veterinarian near you at Clover Vet understands cat health and these creatures’ active natures. Here are some reasons why cat furniture can make life easier for you and your feline friends:

Let them climb on structures, not your curtains.

Structures like cat trees come in varying heights and provide an outlet for a cat’s instinctual need to climb. If your cat furniture has multiple levels or cubicles, your cat can expend even more energy. These towers can also provide an excellent place for your cat to relax. It’s truly a win-win for any cat owner.

Let them scratch on posts, not your furniture.

Just like the climbing structures are essential, posts allow your cats to fulfill their need to scratch. Scratching helps trim your cats’ claws and allows them to scent their trail. While this isn’t a nuisance like spraying, it still allows cats to mark their territory.

Let them play with toys, not your belongings.

Cat toys are a safe way for your pet to practice hunting, pouncing, and swatting behaviors. They’ll be able to act on their instinctual needs and live a more active life. When you provide toys for your cat, you’ll spare your personal items from damage. Try the many different types of toys to find your cat’s favorite. From poles with strings to jingling things, there are many items that you can use to play with your cat or that they can enjoy on their own.
