11 Signs of a Veterinary Emergency

Your pet is a beloved member of your family. That means you want to give them the same care and concern as you would anyone else in your home. You’re already looking out for your pet’s health through routine veterinary examinations and vaccinations. But what if your pet gets sick without warning? How do you know when it truly is a veterinary emergency? Here are 11 signs and symptoms that your pet may need urgent vet care.

  1. Excessive bleeding
  2. Problems standing
  3. Seizures
  4. Paralysis
  5. Loss of consciousness
  6. Weak pulse
  7. Rapid pulse
  8. Rapid breathing
  9. Difficulty breathing
  10. Pale gums
  11. Swollen abdomen

Apart from these warning signs, there are other situations that should cause you to keep a close eye on your pet’s behavior and vital signs. These include insect bites or stings, choking, an accident, a fall, potential poisoning, or choking.

So what should you do if your pet has these symptoms? Think of how you’d react if your spouse, child, parent, or friend suffered from one of these conditions. You’d monitor them and seek immediate medical attention if their symptoms became severe. The same applies for your dog or cat. Your first step should be to call your veterinarian. Your vet and their team knows your pet already. They’ll be familiar with any chronic conditions or underlying health issues that would influence care. If your veterinarian recommends it, or if you feel that your pet’s condition is critical, you should seek urgent vet care near you.
