8 Tips for Traveling With Pets

Traveling with your pets can be fun. But it can also be stressful if you don’t plan ahead. Talking to a vet in York, SC before you leave can save you a lot of headaches and worry once you’re on the road. Here are eight tips from Clover Vet on how to travel while keeping your pets safe and healthy.

Tips for traveling with pets by plane

  1. Visit the vet – Before you head out, schedule an appointment at your local animal hospital. Get a checkup for your pet and make sure they’re up-to-date on all their vaccinations.
  2. Try to book a direct flight – Direct flights limit the chances of your being separated from your pet. Severe weather or baggage mishandling can cause you to wind up on a different flight from your pet.
  3. Get the right crate or carrier – Make sure to purchase a USDA-approved crate or carrier. You should display proper identification and make sure it’s well-ventilated.
  4. Inform all that you’re traveling with a pet – Tell all airline employees, both on the ground and in the air, that you’re traveling with a pet. This way, they’ll be ready to take action should there be a delay.

Tips for traveling with pets by car

  1. See the vet – Just like we mentioned above, always visit a vet in York, SC before traveling with your pet.
  2. Start by prepping – Prepare for the trip by helping your pet get adjusted to riding in the car. Take them on short trips, gradually making them longer. Pack a pet travel kit that includes a bowl, leash, plastic bags, medication, first aid, toys, treats, and other supplies.
  3. Purchase the right crate or carrier – Get a crate or carrier that allows your pet to easily stand, sit, and lie down. Make sure you properly secure the crate or carrier in your vehicle. If you choose not to crate your pet, keep them buckled up in the back seat.
  4. Never leave them unattended in a vehicle – Never leave your pet alone in a car. Even with the windows down, you’re still placing your pet in danger of heat stroke.
